Neutral Density filters

I've never experimented but can I use a light gray gel filter in the place of 
a neutral density filter?  Because I need it for my trip and the filter I 
need (for higher amount of stops increased) won't be delivered by then but I 
have Cokin creative gels and there are a few gray toned ones... will it have 
the same effect or will it wash out my color instead?... I know ND filters 
are just gray but they don't affect color enough to matter to me...  I am 
taking waterfall pictures so I want long exposures  ;-)
