There are guides but no strict mathematical formula since there are other
factors in your processing that will affect the film speed...
In practise you should determine your film speed from your processing. ie.
rather than trying to figure out how to process for 400 ASA, simply
bracket, increase/decrease your processing time by say 30-50% and then see
which frame gives you the correct exposure. The exposure for that frame
will give you your film speed for that processing.
From there you can probably extrapolate/interpolate your results for a
particular film speed.
