I've used a peelable varnish that I got at a big arts & crafts chain store
called Michaels. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where I have stored it, and I'm
too tired with a bad cold to do an exhaustive search, plus it may be in my
locker at the community darkroom. Anyway, it is a liquid frisket, and I think
it is called Miskit. It is in a small jar and cost around US$6. It is in the
section with painting oils and accessories, like cleaners. Make sure you get
one with color added and is recommended for photos (some of the others seemed
to be for painters).
I see others do use rubber cement, but do be very careful. My
fun-with-photography buddy had used rubber cement for many years. Around the
time I bought this stuff, she peeled off the emulsion on a print using rubber
cement (don't know if it was fiber or RC). She decided that even if it was
more expensive, the Miskit was easier and safer to use. I personally hate
rubber cement due to bad memories from earlier times when I had to use it a
lot.
