Have a look at the example images in a variety of books - for example the
Laurie White book - there are indeed noticeable differences when using
different filters.
Kodak HIE works well with all the filters mentioned.
Konica 750 IR film is not really usable with 87 and 87C filters as the film
is sensitive to so little of the light allowed through by the filters. The
ideal filter is an 89B for the "true" infrared effect - a red 25 works well
also.
Filters are not that expensive if you avoid the glass screw in type. The
alternative is to use Cokin type filters which slot into a holder. These
are readily available through a number of outlets. I have them in stock at
CoCam Photo for example :-)
