Holly,
The answer to your question does not involve compression as much as simple
pixel and inch math. Pixels are just single dots of color information. The
more pixels, the larger the file, the more detail, etc. Nothing tricky, just
like a 4x5 piece of film has more information than a 35mm.
Since your monitor only requires 72 pixels per inch, all of today's digital
cameras give an acceptable monitor image. Your printer, on the other hand,
needs at least 150 pixels per inch to look sharp without jagged edges.
So when you multiply 150 by the size of the print you want (11 x 14) you get
1650 x 2100 pixels. Most inexpensive digital cameras still can't do this
resolution (not sure about your Nikon). The 150 dpi I mentioned, is also my
opinion, not an absolute. Some images need more resolution than others,
especially if they have high contrast diagonal straight lines.
There's some Photoshop tricks to get apparent higher resolution, but since
this is an infrared site, email me offlist and I'll send them.
Good luck!
