Most mercury oxide alternatives/replacements are alakaline batteries.
These have a different internal resistance and discharge curve - oh yes,
and they are different voltages. Apart from that they are identical ;-)
If the meter has a "bridge" style elctronic circuit then using different
voltage batteries will not make much difference to meter readings.
Otherwise expect significant metering problems which will become gradually
worse as the alkaline batteries discharge.
