I own a Canon FT-b which originally required the mercury batteries. It would
last quite some time on a single cell. With Mercury no longer available, a
replacement battery is commonly available which uses a combo of zinc and air
(yep - air). This battery was a bit pricey (especially since I provided the
air!) and the most frustrating part was it died very quickly. The battery is
kind of odd, in that you have to remove some tape from the vent hole to let
in the air. The battery doesn't really become functional until some hours
later when the air permeates the internals of the cell.

All in all this wasn't a good improvement - but it does still allow use of
one of my favorite cameras for infrared.
