Newbie needs help

Hi-
My name is Lois Youmans and I'm very glad to have found this list. I've only
been subscribing for about a week and have already picked up some very useful
information. Infrared photography has always held a strong allure for me,
but I must confess that I haven't been as successful at it as I'd like to be.
In the hopes of learning more about infrared I've undertaken a project that
I could use some help with.
I am a undergraduate photo student at Long Island University/ C. W. Post
Campus and currently doing research for my honors thesis, entitled "Infrared
Photography: Science or Surrealism?" It would be most helpful if any of you
could answer some questions for me. You don't have to answer all of the
questions, (just the ones that appeal to you), but I would appreciate an
answer to #10, if nothing else. Please send your responses directly to my
e-mail address (whyohyou@xxxxxxx) so as not to clutter up the mailing list.
Thank you for your cooperation, and your time.
1. Which do you generally shoot/prefer... b&w or color infrared film?
2. Are you concerned with the technical specifications of infrared film (the
'how' and 'why' it works), or only with the effects achieved by using
it....or both?
3. What is your approach when shooting infrared with regard to ISO rating,
metering, filtering, bracketing, etc.?
4. How did you arrive at this approach - extensive testing, trial and error,
or just following the directions on the box?
5. What kinds of subjects do you feel are best suited for infrared
photography?
6. Which light sources do you favor when shooting infrared?
7. Do you think that, after shooting infrared for a while, a photographer can
develop the ability to "see" in infrared?
8. How do you normally process your infrared film? Have you experimented
with processing methods to achieve different results?
9. Have you developed any techniques in the shooting or processing of
infrared film that work well for you?
10. What are you trying to achieve by using infrared film? What does it do
for you that conventional film doesn't do?
