The straight info on HIE AND HSI production...

OK, just got off the phone with my Kodak Professional Inside Sales Rep
at EK Headquarters in Rochester.. Yeah, I guess I use a bit of emulsion
each year...
Having a friendly contact inside the land of the Great Yellow Father
avoids a lot of grief at times like this... (so maybe I am a bit
spoiled...)
To continue, though...
He walked down the hall, literally, and spoke to the US production
manager for High-Speed Infrared Films... BOTH HSI AND HIE are
continuing in production here in the US... If for no other reason than
that the gov't here buys a huge quantity...
It turns out that all the talk of discontinued HSI production stemmed
from efforts at EK to move to a new base for the 4x5 format infrared
emulsion.. Unfortunately the testing didn't provide any options that
were significantly better than the current Polyester base.. So they
will stay with that...
NOW, keep in mind this is US production info...
If anyone doubts this info, my rep suggests they call a Kodak Pro
Services Rep @ 1-800-242-2424, extension 19, and check it out
themselves...
As an aside, I can relate that my rep noted that if this film were
discontinued who would probably hear almost immediately from every major
Pro in NYC who has shot the film, with cries of: "why wasn't I consulted
before this decision was made." So. EK obviously is aware of the
support base this product has..
He also suggested that one keep in mind the following: why would Kodak
discontinue this emulsion when the still produce "older" Ektachrome
emulsions like EPN, EPP, EPD and EPL (some of which sell in much more
limited quantities to specially niches)?
