Re: HIE in 120/220

I just don't buy this arguement. Why would Kodak need
to retool? Kodak already makes 120/220 format in many
other films. They already have all the tools to make
it possible.

As far as the information coming from people who work
intimately with infrared films; I think you're giving
them too much credit. I've been told a whole bucket
load of misinformation from people who use this film.
Just because they are from Kodak doesn't mean their
word is the gosepel. And without mentioning any names,
there have been numerous posts containing
misinformation on this list in the past from people
that mean well, and work intimately with the film, but
are unfortunately wrong. And there is more than one
technical IR book that has blatant mistakes in it.

The only credible reason I can think of that would
prevent mass production of this film in 120/220 format
is if IR sensors are used to tape the leader to the
film. I'm very curious to see how this 120/220 film
is rolled up by machines. Even this could
theoretically be overcome by using far infrared
sensors that are beyond the films spectra senstivity.
I currently splice my own 70mm IR film down and roll
it on to 120 spools by hand, and it time consuming and
hard.

And as far as your comment of "It just wouldn't make
any sense to do so." I would like to point out that it
also doesn't make any sense to sell a product that
doesn't make a profit. Unless they do it just for good
consumer relations. And if that's the case adding
120/220 format would probably improve consumer
relations.

Peace Rolland
P.S. I really don't believe Kodak looses money on this
product year after year after year. Who in Kodak
would supply such intimate financial records to
outside consumers?
P.S.S. Don't mean to offend, I'm just a bit skeptical.

"Well, like I said, the fact is that Kodak would have
to retool to make 120 available. This comes from
people who worked intimately with infrared films at
Kodak. They lose money with the current line, and
would have to incur the costs of retooling to make
available a film that would have even less of a
consumer base than HIE. It just wouldn't make any
sense to do so."
