Some food for thought, for anyone using the 'profit' argument:
For a film that has no significant competition, and a market that is
not extremely price-sensitive (read: low price/demand elasticity, as
lots of art markets are), there is hardly any reason for Kodak to
*not* make a decent profit.
Also look at the price Rolland charges for 120/220 HIE (given the
hassle & labor he is quite right too)....if that doesn't allow Kodak
to make a huge profit, even at half the price, nothing does.
Neither does anything prevent Kodak to go the same way as Konica: an
annual batch of a certain emulsion, ie sales as long as stock
lasts....artsy markets don't complain if they have to stock their
freezer, only commercial photographers do (shooting heaps more film,
and not knowing which emulsion they might need next month).
And then there are also arguments of market-share....at the expensive
of profit....the only problem is that stockholders wouldn't be
impressed by the fact that HIE has a high market share, since it only
makes a tiny fraction of overall Kodak sales....;-))
