I've never actually done this, but from looking at
pictures and reading
books here are a couple of pointers.
1) There is relatively little IR light at night.
Therefore IR film will give
you pictures similar to a regular black and white
film. To obtain that IR
look lean towards overexposure to give you halos
around your light sources.
2) Using a filter is not that effective. I'd use a
light yellow one just to
block out the UV light spectrum. The difference
between a yellow and red
filter when taking night photographs is probably very
hard to tell.
3) BRACKET!
4) To turn your point light sources (street lamps,
building lights, etc)
into star shapped light sources use a small aperture
f/22 or so. OR use a
star filter.

P.S. It would be REALLY NICE if people took 10 seconds
