Don't feel bad about confusing focal lengths and such. Too many 
instructors don't bother to give full explanations The biggest break 
through I had in learning how to use a camera was finding out what 
"f stop" actually meant. It stands for "fraction"  F 8 stands for an 
opening of 1/8 of the  focal length of the lens and f 11 is 1/11th. So 
closing down to f 16 (1/16th) is rational as is opening up to f 2 
(1/2).
