Re: X rays, scanners, in China -??

Following on from my earlier post re films and Xrays, one of the scanner
operatives in OZ mentioned that although 'his' scanner was safe he would
never advise people to allow film through scanners in some other countries
"- CHINA IN PARTICULAR."

As I am off to China in a few weeks I would be interested if anybody has
first hand experience of  this? Once again I will be going through a number
of airports.

Also:
- will they agree to hand search film (if their scanners are not film safe -
and do they admit it of course)?
- what is the cost and quality and availability of B&W film in China ?
- I wonder if it would be worth taking chromogenic B&W film and getting it
processed en route. Does anybody know the quality of generally available D&P
there?
