photography being seen?

Since this has more to do with photography in general than it does with IR 
stuff, maybe you can email me personally  :-)
I just couldn't think of a better group of people to ask!
I'm really interested in moving forward with photography and being seen a 
little at least... Anybody have suggestions on how to do this?  I want to get 
the domain name I set up for a portfolio type of thing seen by people who are 
into photography,  and I'd like to try and enter a photo in a gallery (since 
LA is has soooo many of them!)
Anything like this is new to me, so I was wondering if anyone could give me 
tips on how to at least try!
I wouldn't even know where to begin... I bought Photographer's Market and all 
but I know I'd have to compete with too many people..  
Anyway... I'd just appreciate any kind of comments on beginning :-)
