Actually, the discussion was in reference to the degree that D76 reduces the
edges of the grain clusters during development. However, to answer your
question, much has to do with the gradation. Many people like the way that D76
handles their film, so working for small changes to that to suit one's needs is
the key. I've never used Acufine, so I wouldn't know if that would work for
me. Anyway, I've switched to Xtol for faster films, staying with Rodinal for
the slower ones.
