density

lookin at some negs that I did last night, (35mm HIE) and I am wondering
what kind of density I should be getting on the film??  The film looks like
the darkest areas are just mid grey, but on a contact (with the base   j u
s t   visible and the sprocket holes   j u s t  visible) sheet I can get
good black and white range (Ilford Mulitgrade, #3½ filter)

I developed at 21° C for 7½ min in D76 (small patterson tank)

most of the commercial ones look the same (so do the numbers along the
edge) however I have 2 sets (same lab same day) that are REALLY black and
white

is this (perhaps) the CI difference that I would be getting with XTOL vs
D-76??
