With appologies to Tony Bennet, since I asked this question last
year( and got some good ideas) I'd thought I would kick in my two
cents worth to what Holly and Bertha offered.
Golden Gate Bridge from Baker Beach - Take the last exit before the
bridge, turn left, go past the tourist booth and under the bridge
approach. Just ahead on the right is a place to park by the old
batteries. Follow the paths and carefully climb down to you hit the
beach. Voila, in the afternoon you have sand, surf, lots of foliage
on the slopes and one big bridge for a backdrop. You can get locals,
tourists walking up and down the surf line and probably more than one
bare butt as this is one of the favorite naturalist spots.
Sutro Baths - Take Geary west to the end and find a parking lot on
the right just before you hit the coast. Old ruins of the bath, surf
and rugged coastline... another afternoon shoot.
Palace of Fine Arts - Haven't done this in IR yet but have a killer
early morning shot that has done well for me. didn't get the swan but
the duck filled in nicely.
Pigeon Point Lighthouse - Hwy 1 south of SF. should be great with the
ice plants in bloom now.
Alcatraz - From Fisherman's Warf take the tourboat but be warned...
reserve ahead as this is a popular spot. Some good old walls,
warden's house but not(in my opinion) an IR spot.
Carmel Mission - If you have the time go to monterey/Carmel for this.
Old archetecture, bell tower, fountain and a killer garden. Get there
early as your viewfinder fills with tourists/pilgrims rather fast.
I'll be going back .
Muir Woods - Tried going there on a saturday in April and by ten a.m.
the parkinglot, the overflow and both sides of the road was full.
Ended going out to Point Reyse. Try the redwood forest down by Santa
Cruz, it's less crowded and let me know how you figured out the
exposure.
One idea for anyone going there is to pick up a copy of Andrew
Hudson's book Photo Secrets, San francisco & Northern California. It
tells you how to get all those postcard shots, when to shoot it how
to get there and even where he stood to get his images in the book(
sorry, no tripod alignment marks). although it is for general(ie
color) photography, the information included is invaluable in helping
you get around. He does have a website.http://www.photosecrets.com/
As I am obviously getting long winded I'll close and wish you good
shooting...
