CCD on Coolpix 990

Hi,
I note that Rolland Elliott is confident about removing an infrared
filter from a camera: personally I have no experience of this but it
sounds promising.
I specifically asked a UK Nikon tech support person about this when I
spoke to them about the 990's filtering. He was adamant that it
couldn't be done without damaging the CCD as it was so small. I guess
that rules out Nikon offering it as a service.
This sounds a bit like the situation we had in the UK over recording
with DV camcorders through the digital connector. This was/is
disabled in Europe for tax reasons (don't ask!) but some enterprising
people would enable your machine for a reasonable fee. One company
sold a widget so you could do it yourself.
Certainly I would have no problem with putting an infrared blocking
filter on my lens as otherwise I'd be putting a UV filter there to
protect the glass. It might be that doing this with a 950 will
improve the skin tones ;-)
This is going to be a marketing issue: if enough people want it doing
then someone will do it and, importantly, guarantee the work. We
don't want unusable 990s out there do we?
Are there enough of us infraredees out there?
Regards
Andy Finney
