What about securing the camera to one end of a long pole, and mounting a
spirit level at some place near the other end. As long as the spirit level
was levelled, the camera would always point in a direction that was off
from vertical by the same amount (for example zero degrees). Focusing is of
course no problem when the distance is known. But the camera would have to
allow some kind of electronic release mechanism.
