Ben, Did your friend not run into problems with the IR remote interfering
with his IR film? I know that internal IR leaks in a camera can adversely
affect your pictures. Things such as time date stamps and sometimes
autofocus can imprint on the film as streaks. Did he focus his camera using
a remote? What film and filter was he using?

I saw a website where a guy rigged up a camera to a box kite and triggered
it via IR remote... but you'd want to be a bloody good kite flier to bring
your camera down safely... or use someone else's camera ;-)
It worked quite well too..
