There's certainly a different level of response between conifers
and deciduous trees, but at least around here, the Douglas Fir
trees certainly do show wood effect. A few examples are on my
web page, e.g.

That's HIE shot through an 87 filter -- firs show much more
wood effect with an IR filter than with a 25 red, at least
in my experience.

you can clearly see differences in the IR reflectivity of
different parts of the forest on the right side of the
image -- the brighter areas are younger firs growing in
areas that had been clear-cut several years ago.
