Huge snip!

Thanks to Ben and Dirk for broadening the picture.

The satellite composite picture that Ben posted is very impressive
and shows just how intensive agriculture can be around a desert area.

The desert in this area seems in ecological balance with the fires
going out naturally as they reach a natural break point presumably.

My guess is that as we change our environment then the natural break
points for the fires are diminished in their effectiveness or do not
exist at all.

I have no desire to see this thread extend to a debate on whether
certain forestry practices are good or bad. Clearly the expertise of
those people directly concerned with the issues should be heeded as
they are using their wide range of knowledgeand experience of the
subject to suggest or decide on the best course of action.

My own knowledge of this area is limited so I can only express an
opinion based on limited information.

Fire in areas that are infrared photogenic are bad ;-)
