NEW TO INFRARED-DIGEST !!!!

Andrew Holmes (Holmes1609@xxxxxxx)
 Retired -CEO Banking

I have always been interested in Photography! This past year, due to
shoulder surgery, I re-acquired my photography passion and switched from
Nikon Manual to Nikon Autofocus.
I currently have an Nikon 90S and Nikon F5 with the Nikon AF 17-35 AFS 2.8
and the Nikon AF 28-70 AFS 2.8.
I find that 'Color" photography is not challenging enough and stumbled onto
to Infrared Photography. I only use a black Opaque filter and my first 3
rolls came out blank. After working with Infrared for about one year now at
(Brookgreen Gardens) in Myrtle Beach, S. C. using Kodak High Speed HIE I
think I have finally figured out the "Infrared Method" (using the Black
Opaque filter). !!!!
I shoot with no DX on a "manual" basis at 1/60th and bracket at F5.6, 8 &11.
Since the F11 is generally underexposed as a result of too little exposure on
the Infrared negative, I am going the bracket at f 5.6,7 & 9.
The film is developed by a local photo lab using D-76 and I merely obtain a
"contact sheet". I then select the negatives I want and enter them into a
Negative Scanner; then to my CPU and using the Adope Photo Delux adjust the
negative and print out a 19 inch by 13 inch glossy photo using the new Epson
1270 Photo printer with excellent results suitable for a double matt, glass
and black frame.
I shoot late in the evening to get the long shadows or early in the morning
to get the same depending upon the direction of the shot. I always keep the
Sun at my back. The rest of the time I shoot at high noon when the Sun is
overhead.

My preferred subjects are Landscape with lots of statues and vegetation.

I only shoot in 35mm.

I found out about this site desperately looking for Infrared information in
taking photographs because I did such a poor job. I think I have finally
figured it out and have some excellent results framed and hanging in a
Gallery.

I have no experienced with the lite # 25 filter or the darker red filter
(that you can just see through) and would ask any of you to provide me with
information to see if I can meter through the camera. Now I focus manually
on a tripod without the Opaque filter, then screw on the Opaque filter and
refocus using the focus dot ( for the Infrared film does not focus on the
same plane of light
as normal film). Consequently, each shot is very time consuming but I get
very good sharpness using the Kodak High Speed HIE if I focus correctly.
Also, another (stupid) question: Is the Infrared radiation stronger in the
Summer or the Winter? Or is it the Same? Also, is it possible to use an
'ASA-ISO" with the # 25 or darker red filter? Does anyone use a Night Vision
Scope with an opaque filter to "see" good potential Opaque photos?

Thanks for allowing me to join and I welcome your comments.
