I also had problems with spots but only when developing HIE
in XTOL not D-76.

Do 'your' spots look similar to 'mine'?
I don't think that these defects are relared to the frequently
discussed pinhole problem. They are probably caused by air
bubbles. However, I never found out why this problem occurred
(at least for me) only with XTOL and not D-76.

Dear Marco,
You have air bubbles, and lots of them.
HIE seems more prone to these problems in developement than other films. The
way to eliminate them is vigorous agitation with sharp rapping at the very
beginning of developement to dislodge the bubbles. Also, Edwall makes a
wetting agent, "LFN", as an additive to developer to couteract the problem.
I use it with D-76.
