Before you get a 870/1270; an undocumented requirement:

These only work with a handful of USB cards! Most built on/in usb ports are
not supported (it may or may not work). After months trying to get it to
recognize my usb port; replacing motherboard, deleting and re-installing
windows, driving my computer tech people insane, installing specific belkin
usb card...

I put an 870 on an older PC (233 MHz, 96MB RAM, USB ports and Win 95 with the
USB patch). Couldn't get the USB to work. Parallel worked but I could go out
and eat lunch in the time it took to print an 8x10. So getting USB to work on
older, early USB machines may be a problem (as is Win95 and the USB patch).

Then I got a new PC, 500 MHz, 256MB Ram, Win98 and the printer just flies
along great on the USB port. Plugged it in and that's all I neede to do. I
have my original PC hooked up to the parallel port on the printer and I can
print to it with either machine.

Print quality is superb and I have yet to see any fading or color shifts on
real prints. Since most IR is B&W, color shifts shouldn't be an issue. If you
print in B&W mode you won't get a shift. If you print in color mode you'll get
better tonality but it may not be quite B&W, it will have a tint (or you can
give it one). A color shift in the tint won't be a real problem, it will just
give you a slightly different tint!
