Well, I found that doing a bit of testing has allowed me to save a fair amount
of money, so the $2 per sheet doesn't go down the tubes.

As far as HSI is concerned, I use Rodinal in lieu of Xtol because I like the
gradation that Rodinal allows, and I appreciate the accutance offered.  This
came about originally as a matter of testing.  

I tested HIE under numerous sets of D76 development times and film speeds (EI
50 - 1000), printing each one out.  I also tested with Rodinal, though not as
extensively.  I liked the gradation but not the grain (if you visit my Web
site, you'll see my more ethereal images within the Kodak Infrared section, so
I'm not totally averse to grain - I just want to be able to control it).

When I tested HSI with Rodinal I liked what I saw better than D76, so I went
with it.  It's all a matter of doing some testing, then deciding what will work
best for your own particular vision.
