Must see:

 Chitzen Itza, no less than a half day there, it's a full day trip with
the buses (or cab = expensive)
 Tulum (East coast, south of Playa del Carmen)
 Governor's (?) Palace in the city, with very large and wonderful murals
NOT by Diego Rivera

The market(s) are interesting, generally a universal truth in Mexico,
add wild boar, other jungle critters and produce to the mix and it can
only get better

Merida is a beautiful city, very colonial. Watch out for the peppers,
habeneros are lethal to the ill-prepared palate

Also, if you really like Mayan ruins, while near Tulum check out Coba
