Something which puzzles me is this:
Hand-carry X-ray machines are claimed safe for film. This has been my
experience, as well. What is the purpose of the lead film bag, then? To
discourage the security folks from pawing your film (not a bad reason,
actually...)?
Checked-baggage x-ray machines can produce 1/3 stop of fogging per pass,
according to something I read not long ago in some photographic magazine
which ran tests. That's bad news indeed. But I carry my film anymore, since
my luggage once sat on the ramp for a day in Carribean sunshine, and then a
thunderstorm...
