IR Flash

What is a good IR filter for a flash. I have tried polyester and gel filters 
in front of my flash, but neither last very long. I have built a box (similar 
to a soft box on the front of my flash) which keeps the filter 3" from the 
unit, but the filters tend to still get too hot and curl. Has anyone made 
anything that last longer than a few rolls of film?
I'm not asking type as in 87-89b, I'm asking about the material the filter is 
made of, ie glass (too expensive) gel or poly.
