Hi, just a few quick words of caution based on some testing I did recently.
If I find the time to put some sample pictures onto a web page, I may
comment more on this matter later on.

I really like having slides of IR scenes, but I had problems from the very
beginning (half a year ago) with modest density in the shadows (where it
should obviously be high after reversal processing). After letting the
chemicals age for a few months (no time to take IR pictures), the problems
got much worse, with an effect similar to solarization, but affecting areas
that got little or no exposure in the camera (they turned gray). Strange
enough, a roll of Delta 400 processed in the same tank turned out just fine.

To make a long story short, it seems to be the fogging agent of the second
developer that works badly (and even worse with age) together with HIE.
Some exposure to light is needed to help the fogging agent. Opening the
tank after the clearing bath to expose the film to light solved the
problem. A very short exposure does not seem to be enough, at least not
with old chemicals. Take the film reels out of the tank and hold them under
a light source, moving them around to expose them from all sides (make sure
to avoid shading the film with your fingers).

Also, I suspect that my kit was old to begin with, because it was marked 98
something and may have been sitting on the store shelf for a couple of
years. So it could be that freshly produced T-MAX 100 Direct Positive
Development Outfit works fine with HIE even without optical fogging. But to
play it safe, or if the maximum density seems low, I would recommend an
exposure to light after the clearing bath.

Best regards,

Otto Giesenfeld
