Jon, a few words on the filter and temperature.  

Common office tape/scotch tape will do just fine to attach the filter  
The gelatin filter mounted BTFR will work for a while but my 
experience was for  only about three rolls of film then it cracks. 
You are better off finding a polyester filter now. In the long run it will 
be cheaper than trying to use gelatin.

I can appreciate your problem maintaining temperature.  At one 
time I had three teen age daughters drawing on our hot water 
supply.  I usually just set out several containers of water the night 
before so that everything is at the same temperature, usually 
around 72F. This also get rid of the chlorine in the water and allows 
air bubbles to escape. The wash temperature isn't critical, just 
reasonable.
