Bio for Ron Frakes

Please fill in this bio:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
- Name: Ronald A. Frakes

- Profession/Study:
Currently design software for "service bureau" companies (i.e.,
printing companies and slide creation houses). Also do occasional bits of
photography for hire. University trained to be an economist or historian.
(Obviously, neither direction worked out.)

- Country: USA

- Personal history of photography:
began with a college-level course in the late 1960s, continued as an
amateur photographer for more than a decade, then signed on as a custom B/W
printer for the company that currently employs me. Did commercial and
industrial photography for nearly a decade, then began to write custom
software for our own use. Now that software is our primary product, all of
my photographic work is personal, of the "fine arts" variety. (Yes, I do
exhibit regularly, though it is doubtful that my fame precedes me.)

- Preferred subjects:
People (environmental portraiture), landscapes, architectural details,
flowers / foliage, shop windows. Nothing all that exotic.

- Materials (film, filters, paper, chemistry):
HIE (of course), have used IR E6 and Konica's B/W infrared in
limited quantities, primary B/W films are Ilford Delta 100 & 400 and Kodak
Tech Pan. Filters include standard polarizers, a custom-made green
polarizer, the usual run of 25/29 reds, some orange and green, plus a set
of Minolta Portrayer (portrait) filters. Paper: 95% of the time I use
Ilford Warmtone Fibre, but plan to return to using Oriental Seagull now
that it is readily available again. Prefer XTOL and Diafine for film
processing (custom brews for the Technical Pan), Agfa WA for paper
processing. Use a lot of selenium and KBT, and some of the Berg toners.

- Format (35mm/medium format/large format):
Mostly 35mm (Nikon); occasionally rent or borrow medium format. Plan to
make a major changeover to medium format as soon as practicable.

- Other strange hobbies:
Have written for magazines (one article for Darkroom User, was Midwest
Art Correspondent for The Compost Journal), and have written an
internet e-magazine for a while (currently on hiatus).

- How did you find out about this list:
George L. Smyth's web site.

- In case you already have your own IR-Gallery on the web, please
state the URL/address: (I will then also add your site to the overview
of IR-Galleries on my homepage!....think of the fame you can get....:-))

No website, no plans for one.

- Expand on anything photographic you like:
! The Black Hole of subjects ...
If conventional cameras are still in use when I retire, the plan is to
become a photo-educator, in a small way. Even if children can't read, it
may be that they can be helped to see. Would welcome discussion with anyone
who teaches or plans to teach small classes.
