AR-5 with EIR

I've had limited experience with EIR, and all of the rolls have been
processed E-6.  Could someone explain the different characteristics of AR-5
developing?  Is there less contrast?  Is the colour more "accurate" in some
respect?  Also, is it possible to modify E-6 (using sulfuric or sodium
hydroxide in the colour developer) to get (subjectively) better results? 
If this information is in a FAQ, just point the way.  (Infrared Digest has
turned out to be quite an interesting message forum, BTW.)
