I just read a part of the Complete Nikon Handbook. It
claims the Nikon Manual focus 300mm f/4.5 ED lens does
NOT require Infrared focusing correction. It would be
a very nice lens to shoot with wide open to get a
blurred background without worrying about correcting
the focus.

Interestingly enough it's replacement, the 300mm f/4.5
ED internal focusing lens does require IR focus
correction.
