Do you make this statement because you believe that auctions in general 
cannot achieve the "financial, social and ethical optimum", or because of 
something about eBay in particular? I had always thought that open auctions 
were the most efficient free-market mechanism available for conducting 
transactions that were equally fair to both buyer and seller. With a large 
volume of both buyers and sellers, it is difficult for a buyer to obtain an 
unfair advantage over a seller or vice versa. Or is that not what you mean 
by "financial, social and ethical optimum?"
