The D1 can be used for IR work however the IR blocking filter is realy
quite good. I am suprised than someone has been able to get a image
with a 87c, though if you've looked at the image it's not great quality
do to the blocking filter.

When I ran some tests with our D1 I was not able to get a result that I
thought was acceptable with a filter stronger tha a R72. However I was
able to get good results with a 87c with a coolpix 950 (a 990 with be
with me soon and I do intend to run the same tests but the blocking
filter is stronger than the 950 so they should not be so good).

All this being said, I think the D1 is a excellant camera and to this
end I have been having a very long discussion with Nikon about getting
the IR blocking filter removed. They keep saying it is possible and
although fidely to do, not that difficult (the only thing that makes it
awkward is the fact that the filter and CCD are part of the same sealed
unit). The main problem I have had with them has been getting them to
carry out the work. I have had to get permission from Nikon Japan for
them to carry this out and sign various disclaimers about who the camera
might work afterwards.

The alteration is currently being done (so I am told) and should be
finished in a week or two. I will be very interested to see how well it
preforms as the CCD in it is sensitive upto about 1200nm.

One the D1 is back with me, I intend to do some testing comparing the
Coolpix 950 and 990 and the D1 (both with and with out IR blocking
filter) with thier IR suitabilty. I'll post to the list once this has
been done and hopefully get around to getting a webpage up with the IR
info I have collected, though I have been saying that for over a year
now (Best webpage software comments welcome off list).

Hello,

has anyone of you ever tried digital IR with a Canon D-30 or Nikon D1?
Probably these pro cameras have an IR-blocking filter in front of the
CCD, which would them unsuitable for IR, but I'm not sure about this.
Unfortunately the manufacturers' data sheets don't say anything about
IR...

Thanks in advance,

Eckhard
