Well if you look in the back of Kodak's L9 professional catalog (available
for free by calling 1-800-242-2424) it lists all of their professional
digital cameras based on Nikon and/or Canon bodies. And interestingly enough
it also lists replacement IR blocking filters for each camera! Leading me to
believe that these filters are easily removed in the Kodak line up.

In addition Kodak recently had a big sale of their IR digital cameras
several months ago. Check the archives for details.

I have seen CCD sensors that have the IR block fitler incorporated in them.
They are so close to the CCD and are basically epoxied in during the
manufacuting phase that it would require very delicate work to remove them.
I for one wouldn't try it!

Good luck with the D1 conversion. For others interested in this route I
think getting a Kodak pro digital camera converted would be much less of a
hassle.

The D1 can be used for IR work however the IR blocking filter is realy
quite good. I am suprised than someone has been able to get a image
with a 87c, though if you've looked at the image it's not great quality
do to the blocking filter.

When I ran some tests with our D1 I was not able to get a result that I
thought was acceptable with a filter stronger tha a R72. However I was
able to get good results with a 87c with a coolpix 950 (a 990 with be
with me soon and I do intend to run the same tests but the blocking
filter is stronger than the 950 so they should not be so good).

All this being said, I think the D1 is a excellant camera and to this
end I have been having a very long discussion with Nikon about getting
the IR blocking filter removed. They keep saying it is possible and
although fidely to do, not that difficult (the only thing that makes it
awkward is the fact that the filter and CCD are part of the same sealed
unit). The main problem I have had with them has been getting them to
carry out the work. I have had to get permission from Nikon Japan for
them to carry this out and sign various disclaimers about who the camera
might work afterwards.
