Diagonals can lead you astray if the foramt is far from square.
For instance, a 24x80 panoramic has a diagonal of 83 but so does
a format which is 59 square.  You might say that 24x80 has 1920
square mm of viewing area while the 59x59 has 3481 but it's worse 
that that: a lot of the 24x80 panoramic is viewed at quite a slant 
so the outer edges don't count as much.  I think the way to gauge
formats is going to be by solid angle but I don't know how to 
figure it...yet.
