Interesting idea - sort of a figure of merit for a format.  This would give
solid angle and aspect ratio equal weight, more or less, in the figure of
merit.  Is that the object or am I missing the point?  (not uncommon)

One thing I should have said in the diagonal's favor is that it is a good
number to know since lenses' field diameters must cover the diagonals
approximately (actually the lenses are offset a minimal amount to set
the stereo window).

Speaking of that offset, where is Joel's program for calculating oculars?
(the ORT) Did it move to a new site?  That program took care of offset, if 
I remember correctly.  Can the program be purchased for home use?
