I'd always heard five stops for chromes but I bet the person who said
that had less stringent standards than the person who said four.

Regardless, it sounds like we all need to shoot negative film and get
a chrome writer.  So you manipulate the scan of the negative and then
you can compress the range as required and your writer can correct for 
the chrome's non-linearities.    Good, now who will put this package
together and sell it to us?  8-)
