I have worked with John's MAOFD formula a fair bit. I find it to be
the best, most accurate predictor of stereo viewability. There are a
couple of articles about it on my web site.
When I shot 35mm, I used the scatter gun approach. I shot everything
twice and three times, bracketing like crazy. The film is cheap
enough, and I thought this was the "professional" way to do things.
Now that I shoot MF, I put much more thought into my photography. My
ratio of keepers has tripled, at least.
I think much more about flash and lighting, optimal focus, exposure,
and degree of stereo effect. That's where the MAOFD formula comes
in. I used it a great deal at first, but now that I have a feel for
the geometry, I only haul it out occasionally.
I find great beauty in the math as well as in the photography. Thanks, John.
