I have shot 4x5 stereo with both one and two bodies. Using one camera it is
possible to get some incredible images, but it is about as much trouble as
one could possibly go to in making stereo images (bar tilting from the
imbalance, things moving between exposures). In addition one will probably
miss just as many great shots due to all the time is takes to set up and
execute this system. Then I started using 2 medium format cameras, but
decided that the trouble of making 4x5 images was worth it to me so I
constructed 2 lightweight 4x5 cameras so that I could again get large format
stereo without the difficulty of trying to use one camera. The system I am
now using does not allow interchangable lenses and also does not allow
focusing (it is focused at 17', which gives 9' to infinity at f45 -- I am
now working on a focusable version). The lenses are 120mm Schneider
Apo-Symmars and were matched at the factory. I suppose I am losing something
by not being able to tilt-swing and rise-fall, but then you can't do that
with medium format either. I chose 120mm because that gives me a normal
lens for a 4" square image (square is my preferred format), or I can get a
slightly wide image by using the whole negative or I can crop the image
somewhat if I want to and still get the benefit of a very large negative.
