No they aren't too dark. They are beautiful
in content and brightness (range).

A long time ago I did lots of brightness measurements:
http://www.angelfire.com/ca/erker/brightness.html
My viewer is still lit by the Cabin light panel with
my switchable 4.8/6.0V battery pack. I normally use
the 4.8 setting and find it plenty bright. For bright
rooms and out of doors I use the 6V setting for an
extra stop of brightness.
But the 11 or 12 EV (100 speed) I'm getting is
no where near the EV17 I used to get with my viewer
in steal-the-light mode when aimed at the sun.
>As bright as my viewer is, I still get black blacks in viewing Velvia (damn
>film is bulletproof!),
I don't think Velvia black is very black after
being used to Kodachrome (in 35mm) but it is
adequate I guess.

I found the Scala shots to be low contrast but
wasn't looking for blacks in the scene. Several
of the shots looked good with that contrast but
one or two could have used more punch (contrast).

I found it to be very grainy except in areas
with lots of detail. But then I'm hyper sensitive
to grain in 3d.
