I'll take your word for it. However, we are talking about
stereo MF projection. The implications of "stereo" is that you
have two pairs of polarizing glasses, one in the projector and
one in front of your eyes, stealing both resolution and light.
Coupled with the fact that most people sit far behind and are
seeing a much smaller image, the end result is that stereo
projection is very low in the demand for resolution.
Since most MF images are square (correct?), they will be
projected occupying only 1/3 of the NSA screen so despite their
name, they will look the same size as a Realist format stereo
slide. Granted, much better than a Realist format slide. But
when the 2x2s and the anamorphic 3ds hit the screen, they might
steal the show just because of their sheer size.
Despite these reservations, I must confess that in my first NSA
convention in 1988 I was lucky to see the show "Highway USA"
which is not MF but LF (LARGE Format). Professional
photography, coupled with Paul Harvey's narration, was
absolutely stunning!!! The special projector used for this is
now in the NSA Library. There is 35mm copy circulating around
but the copying job (and even the sound) is really bad. I don't
know if NSA will ever show the LF version again but if they do
don't miss it!
And, of course, the argument that there are images that only
exist in this format is a very good reason for setting up MF
projection in NSA. I am all for it and looking forward to it.
