I tried Testors, and three other kinds of paint. I find flat black paint
still has a little bit of sheen. Even Krylon "ultra-flat" has a bit of a
sheen, I think. I found a "suede" (flocking) paint which would be nice, but
it does *not* come in black!

Soot would be icky, but really flat. In fact, the flatest black paint I
found was called "lampblack". Still it's not as flat as flocked paper, but
you don't have to hold your camera in a campfire. :^)
