When I got my Spud, I wanted to leave the case on to 
minimize light leaks if possible. I ran into the same problem
described above. Fortunately, my case came with a matching
leather shim to take up gap caused by the 3/8 tripod hole
thingy described elsewhere in the above referenced letter.
I cut the front of my case away from the bottom and sewed a
flap onto it made from the shim. Then I took them to the
local saddle and leather shop and had them put a couple of
snaps on them. Now when I take pictures, I leave the case 
bottom on the camera and just take off the front of the 
case. I will be happy to send pictures and more detailed 
specs if anyone wants them.
