I have a number of old cameras and Lubitels.  I try to avoid 
hitting the self timer but have accidently hit them and gotten into 
the same pickle.  Except for once, I 'gently persuaded' it to 
complete its journey.  The one exception I took to my favorite 
camera repairman who fixed it in a few minutes for no charge  :-)  
He cautioned me to avoid these things.  It seems to me that the
self timer may be the first thing to go bad and the easiest to 
live without.  

I picked up some add-on self timers for a couple of dollars at 
camera shows  - just in case I may ever use one  ;-)
