No, not a joke! I think the bulb ends follow some standards for attaching.
If there are lamps made that are shorter, then I think it would be easier
to buy the ready made lamp which has all the fittings, wires, a switch and
a ballast and go after the housing with a hacksaw. You can generally do a
workaround re the battery holder if that's a problem because Radio Shack
has quite a few variations-- also there are smaller 6v batteries out
there. At $14 it's not to expensive to play with a little...
