As I was saying in tech3d digest 270, you can also invert the basic
MAOFD formula a couple of ways.  Here's one:

    B  = Base separation
    D  = Deviation on film
    F  = focal length of lens
    S  = best focus distance for range of S1->S2 [added for MAOFD, below]
    S1 = distance to near object in picture
    S2 = distance to far object in picture.

          2*B*F*S
S1 = -------------------
      D*S + 2*B*F - D*F

        S*S1
S2 = ----------
      2*S1 - S

I hope I got that right.  8-)  I know the spreadsheets work.  Like 
I said, this is really only important if S -> F.  Otherwise, the 
approximation is plenty good.
